Our Thoughts
The Hotel des Balances is a historic upscale hotel located in the heart of Lucerne’s Old Town that offers elegant, minimalistic rooms and outstanding views.
Nestled in the heart of Lucerne's enchanting old town, Hotel des Balances is a four-star luxury sanctuary, offering a blend of historical charm and modern sophistication.
Originally unveiled to the world in 1807, this architectural gem traces its roots back to the 13th century, a testament to Lucerne’s rich heritage.
One of the hotel’s most attractive features is its prime location, along the picturesque banks of the River Reuss.

This former guildhall boasts a six-story facade adorned with enchanting wrought-iron balconies, attracting the admiration and camera lenses of nearly every passerby. Stepping into the lobby, you’re greeted by a majestic grand staircase adorned with gilded handrails and a complimentary welcome drink, a subtle nod to the opulence that awaits within.
While Hotel des Balances exudes an air of old-school luxury, it remains refreshingly unpretentious. A thoughtful renovation in 2015 seamlessly melds contemporary aesthetics with historical reverence, ensuring a stay that’s both elegant and comfortable.
With 56 rooms spread across five floors, Hotel des Balances excels not only in its elegant accommodations but also in its exceptional service and breathtaking vistas. During our three-night stay, we were thrilled with the spaciousness of our romantic room—I truly have never seen a hotel room so big!

Hotel des Blancs also prides itself on its eco-conscious approach, harnessing the power of the river for heating and cooling. However, it’s important to note that air conditioning is available exclusively in fifth-floor rooms, making them the ideal choice for summer travellers.

When booking your stay, don’t forget to request a room with a river view. These rooms provide a postcard-worthy backdrop, and most include a small balcony. While the views of the Old Town offered on the other side of the hotel are undeniably charming, they pale in comparison to the lake vistas, and with the windows open, are somewhat noisy.
Descending to the hotel’s lower levels, you’ll discover Restaurant Balances, an award-winning spot that features a delectable fusion of French and Mediterranean flavors. I would highly recommend dining on the alfresco riverfront terrace during the warmer months, as the view simply can’t be beat.

Service at Hotel des Balances is impeccable. The dedicated staff not only caters to your every need but goes above and beyond, facilitating ticket bookings for day trips and providing unparalleled assistance.
The only minor drawback lies in the absence of wellness facilities such as a pool, gym, or spa on the premises. However, anyone looking to get their steps in will be pleased to know that Lucerne’s pedestrian-friendly streets offer ample opportunities for invigorating strolls and exploration.
Hotel des Balances stands as a timeless landmark in Lucerne, where history, luxury, and exceptional service converge. With its unique blend of old-world charm and contemporary elegance, it promises a stay that’s as unforgettable as the city itself.
