COVID-19 Rapid Tests a Game Changer for Travel

Our Thoughts

Worldwide, a number of rapid tests for COVID-19 have been approved by health authorities. Game changer? Absolutely, as this allows countries to contemplate the necessity of 14 day quarantine periods.

Worldwide, a number of rapid tests for COVID-19 have been approved by health authorities, such as the new Abbott Laboratories test.

The test, which takes as little as 14 minutes from test to results, is approved for use in Canada and the United States.

Airlines such as American, United, Hawaiian and Air Canada have adopted this option for their passengers at certain departure airports to limited destinations, free of charge. Departure airports include Air Canada at Toronto, American at Dallas and United at San Francisco.

Game changer? Absolutely, as this allows countries to contemplate the necessity of 14 day quarantine periods. Hawaii, for example, is open to transpacific passengers who hold negative test results 72 hours before departure, effective October 15. The Bahamas is another country commencing November 1.

I’m hopeful that as more rapid test options become available, we’ll be able to travel with some form of confidence.
